This workbook is for you if…

  • You’re new to cello and feel like you have a murky understanding of all of the notes on the fingerboard and how they relate to each other

  • You struggle choosing your own fingerings for a piece of music

  • You struggle with shifting because you tend to shift from note to note instead of from one left hand position “neighborhood” to another

  • You want increased confidence and clarity whenever you approach playing an unfamiliar passage

  • You’re tired of fingerboard geography knowledge holding back your enjoyment of music-making

    here’s how to use it

    • Choose one of the left hand neighborhoods that you want to work on and go to that section (i.e. 1st position)

    • One or more notes are already filled out for you; your job is simply to fill in the rest of the notes

    • As you keep filling out the notes of each specific neighborhood by hand, you will strengthen your memory so that eventually you can clearly see in your mind’s eye every note within reach in every left hand position of the workbook

    • Keep in mind, if you want to expand your horizons beyond the scope of this workbook, you can create your own workbook for notes higher than the lower neck positions (5th-7th positions, thumb position) or even lower neck positions including a left hand extension either backwards or forwards
