My #1 exercise for bow finger flexibility

One of the hardest aspects of learning to play the cello is developing a flexible bow hand with supple yet powerful fingers.

Simply allowing your hand to “go limp” is not the answer. Doing so will create a hand that -while relaxed- is incapable of nuance.

What we need to develop is flexible fingers that eventually have the capacity to work independently of each other during each bow stroke.

In the video above I present a short but detailed description of what I consider to be the number one exercise to promote finger flexibility in your bow hand.

To do this well, you will also need to have/develop a flexible thumb, so this exercise also promotes a more flexible thumb as well. Give it a try!
